Camping gets a makeover

11th June 2010 Print

Sleeping outdoors has had a makeover. Say goodbye to leaky tents and waking up stiffly on a deflated air bed. Mixing glamour with the great outdoors, ‘glamping’ is the perfect solution for an inexpensive girly holiday without skimping on little luxuries.

With a few tips from Caxton FX, the foreign currency specialist, you’ll find your budget stretching further meaning you’ll have the cash to splurge on those glam accessories!

Location, location, location
For real value for your pounds this summer, head to the eurozone. Not only can you get to countless destinations without having to fly (think volcano), your holiday cash is likely to travel further than you do. Duncan Higgins, currency analyst at Caxton FX explains, “The pound is at its strongest point against the euro since August of last year. By heading to the continent you’ll be getting more euros for your pounds.”

Prepaid currency card
To get the full benefit of the weaker euro, plan your travel money in advance. With a Caxton FX Euro Card, you not only get great rates, and no overseas ATM fees, the card is sleek and stylish making it your perfect purse companion. It can be used anywhere you see the MasterCard acceptance mark, whether it be online, in store or at an ATM. A safe and hassle free way to carry your travel cash –perfect for buying your picnic goodies! Apply at caxtonfxcard.com.

To tent or not to tent
The real beauty of glamping is the array of accommodation to choose from. Go Boho chic with a natural cotton bell tent (belltent.co.uk) or choose a site with static tents, if you’d rather soak up rays than faff with guy ropes. Sites such as goglamping.net are great starting points to find your yurt/treehouse/tipi.

Food glorious food
Camping stoves are all very quaint but this is glamping! Weber offers a great range of portable barbeques, which are compact and light. No more cold tin of baked beans – tuck into some chargrilled salmon. Charcoal not your thing? Head to weberbbq.co.uk to see their range of portable gas BBQs. Take your Caxton FX Euro Card to the nearest shops and stock up on baguettes, salami and other culinary delights.

Ferry smart
Getting a good deal on your channel crossings doesn’t have to be mission impossible. Simon Calder (simoncalder.co.uk) travel writer and broadcaster says, “It’s possible to get good deals when booking direct through the ferry company’s website. However, compare tickets at directferries.co.uk as prices can often be better. Travelling off-peak will also drive down your costs.” Brittany Ferries sail daily to France & Spain. Head to brittanyferries.com.

Common scents
Eating al fresco is one of the best ways to dine. Set the mood with scented candles, which not only look pretty, they also help keep the mossies at bay. The White Company have a great range of these (our favourite is white rose), head to thewhitecompany.com to find yours.
