Rare bird spotted on Taiwan’s North Coast

22nd June 2010 Print

Birding enthusiasts have an added reason to visit Taiwan after a rare Red-throated Loon was spotted on the beach at Wanli, near Keelung Harbour.

This recent sighting is the first time that this species has been seen in Taiwan for over 40 years.

The Red-throated Loon, also known as the Red-throated Diver, is the smallest and lightest of the loon family. It is usually found in northern Arctic regions and even during it’s annual migration south, seldom travels below latitude of 30 degrees north. Northern Taiwan is at latitude 25 degrees north.

Taiwan makes a fantastic destination for bird watching. With areas of outstanding natural beauty, the island is home to 15 endemic species and more than 60 endemic subspecies, several of which are on track to be elevated to full species status. Birdwatchers are likely to see several native Taiwanese birds on the island, including the Fire-breasted Flowerpecker and the extremely rare transient Chinese Egret.
