Taiwan to host world’s largest swimming competition
The largest swimming race in the world will take place at one of Taiwan’s top tourist sights, Sun Moon Lake, on 20 September 2010.
The Sun Moon Lake International Swimming Festival is an annual event held around the Mid-Autumn Festival. Each year, it attracts up to 10,000 people who swim the three kilometres to the opposite shore, often using floatation devices to aid their task. Usually swimming is not permitted on the lake, which is considered sacred by local indigenous tribes.
As well as being a popular tourist attraction, Sun Moon Lake is the largest lake in Taiwan. It is situated in Yuchih, Nantou, which is well known for its beauty as well as Taiwan’s leading five-star leisure hotel, The Lalu. The lake is surrounded by historic temples and pavilions which visitors can explore on foot or by boat.
