Most powerful Volvo shines at Hillhead Show

Since the launch of the FH16-700 in January 2009, it has proven to be a versatile truck in a number of construction industry and related applications. The three-axle tractor units in both single and double drive variants are finding favour with construction plant haulage operators in particular.
The fact that the Volvo D16G700 16-litre diesel delivers maximum torque of 3150 Nm at between only 1000 and 1550 rpm makes it very driver friendly for higher gross weight applications such as plant haulage – particularly when the need to maintain satisfactory journey times is coupled to a requirement for low speed manoeuvring when delivering machines to construction sites. The latter is helped by the FH16-700’s I-Shift automated transmission.
Prestigious powerplant
“The Volvo FH16 is intended for the very heaviest and most demanding of transport operations. It is also a highly prestigious truck for the customer who is looking for something truly out of the ordinary. And with 700 HP, the Volvo FH16 sets itself apart from everything else in the industry,” says Göran Nyberg, Volvo Trucks Managing Director, UK and Ireland.
Competitive fuel consumption
“With the FH16-700, we have succeeded in raising engine power, lowering emissions and keeping fuel consumption the same as before despite the power increase.” reveals Göran Nyberg.
Lower environmental impact
The Volvo FH16 is certified for the new Euro 5 European emission requirements that came into force in autumn 2009, which means that emissions of nitrogen oxide have been cut by more than 40 percent. In other words, the Volvo FH16 has become even more powerful but without compromising on environmental standards. In addition to the 700 hp version the Volvo FH16 is also available in variants producing 540 and 600 HP respectively.
Extreme tests
The project group behind the D16G engine worked for three years to develop, test and evaluate various solutions. Since the Volvo FH16 is built for the very heaviest and most demanding of haulage tasks, the field tests were conducted in operating environments that offer tough, even extreme, conditions. As part of its test programme, the Volvo FH16 hauled heavy road-trains through Australia’s deserts, carried timber in northern Sweden and operated in severe cold and was tested at altitudes of up to 3600 metres in the Rocky Mountains.
FH16-700 on the Volvo stand
The FH16-700 on the Volvo stand at the Hillhead Show in 2010 is a 44 tonnes GCW 6x2 push-axle tractor unit. It features the D16G 16-litre in-line 6 cylinder diesel. Rated output is 700 HP between 1550 and 1800 rpm. Maximum torque of 3150 Nm is delivered between 1000 and 1050 rpm. The 12-speed overdrive I-Shift automated transmission transmits power through a hub-reduction RS1370HV single drive axle with a 3.46:1 final drive ratio.
