As part of their 2010 investment plan, Widnes-based, Grundy and Co Excavations have added two new Volvo FM 8x4 tippers, to their mixed fleet of 20 vehicles.

The purchase, from local Volvo Dealership Thomas Hardie Commercials, follows a recent £1.6 million capital outlay for a new state-of-the-art, sand washing plant. Managing Director, Kevin Grundy explained, “Knowing that our investment in the new washing plant would unearth unexplored markets, we began looking at purchasing two vehicles some time ago.”

With growth in mind and to assist with the purchase decision, Grundy and Co Excavations undertook a number of trials with their existing fleet, which resulted in the Volvo coming out on top.

Kevin stated, “Our Volvo fleet excelled in a number of areas, the most notable was fuel efficiency. Fuel performance figures were in excess of 50% greater on the Volvo’s - averaging 9 miles to the gallon - compared with the rest of our fleet attaining just over 6. “

Expecting similar fuel efficiency, the new Volvos were specified with T-ride suspension, a 9-speed manual transmission system and Euro-4 technology to deliver 380bhp.

Kevin commented that, “Based on fuel savings alone it made sound commercial sense to purchase Volvo,” adding, “I only wish I had a few more of them.”
