JJ Food Service go for Volvo productivity

Award-winning food distribution specialist JJ Food Service are now operating over 100 Volvo FL 18-tonners after having moved away from 7.5 tonne operation almost entirely.
JJ Food Service Transport Manager, Mick Montague explained, “At one time we were operating a fleet at 7.5 and 18 tonnes on a 50:50 basis, but the smaller truck has had its day for us and it is dying off. It carries all the legislative burden of a bigger truck with a tacho and ‘O’ licence and it just can’t match it for payload and productivity.”
JJ Food Service also operates a number of the previous Volvo FLs together with a handful of Volvo FM rigids.
JJ’s FL 18-tonners are all fitted with ‘fridge bodies from the UK’s leading specialist, Solomon’s in Rossendale, Lancashire.
With ambient, chilled and frozen product to deliver, reliability is essential and JJ Food Service need the best dealer support available. Supplying dealer Volvo Truck and Bus Centre London use their nearby Enfield Dealerpoint to deliver parts and sales support.
On the choice of the FL, Mick Montague was clear. He said, “We feel that the FL at 18-tonnes combined with the Solomon fridge body and a tail-lift, represents the state-of-the-art at this weight and it’s the best you can buy. They are Euro-5, which is as green as we can get and they are economical on fuel. They’ve a good gearbox and are easy to drive too. My drivers like them. As for the Volvo dealer, they deliver good service and any rare problems are resolved swiftly - it’s all I’m looking for.”
