Volvo FMX building solid order book

The newly-launched Volvo FMX construction truck chassis is winning early orders in one of the toughest sectors of the UK truck market. With production starting in September, the new FMX will be appearing on Britain’s highways and in quarries in the autumn.

Purpose-built for the construction and allied sectors, the new Volvo FMX features the most rugged design and build. It’s fitted with Volvo’s powerful 11 litre and 13 litre engines that provide high torque at low revs, together with sophisticated braking systems that add extra safety and extend the life of the truck’s foundation brakes. With an unmistakeable appearance, the new FMX looks the part too.

Among the first customers to get their order in has been award-winning, Tottenham-based O’Donovan Waste Disposal Ltd. who have ordered two 8x4 FMX chassis with steel tipper bodies. Running a 65-strong fleet that is predominantly Volvo, company boss Michael O’Donovan said, “It looks like a promising truck so we’ve taken a pair to start with. We need reliability and good dealer back-up and the FMX looks like a good bet.”

O’Donovan’s FMX spec includes the 13 litre 380hp engine and they join over half of Volvo’s construction customers in adding the automated I-Shift gearbox.

A further three FMX 8x4 chassis have been ordered by TW Services of Thanet, the leading waste management specialist in Kent who handle over 400,000 tonnes of material a year. Company owner Spencer Ray said, “The new FMX looks more than capable of hard work. With our mix of both on and off road duties and our high percentage of laden running, we went for the 13 litre 420hp engine. We also took the I-Shift ‘box and the VEB Volvo engine brake, which is very impressive.”

Thanet Waste’s three FMX tippers will be fitted with Thomson steel bodies and one will get a clamshell grab. They go on the road in November.

To date over 15 orders have been placed for the new FMX truck – and that is before production starts this September !
