Discover Surtsey – Iceland’s youngest volcanic island

15th July 2010 Print

Volcanologists and nature lovers can now discover Surtsey, Iceland’s youngest volcanic island and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, through a new interpretive centre, which opened in the Westman Islands on 2 July, 2010.

Preserved as a ‘living laboratory’ and listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2008, Surtsey has been free from human interference since 1964.

The new Surtsey Centre is dedicated exclusively to the uninhabited volcanic island and retells the unique history of its formation following the underwater eruptions that took place from 1963 – 1967, without interfering with the finely balanced ecological equilibrium of the island.
