They may be several decades past school age but that didn’t stop the residents of Roseland Parc throwing themselves into the spirit of a school sports day.

The Summer Fun Day at the retirement village in Tregony, near Truro, saw residents and visitors split into red, green, blue and yellow teams – just like on school sports day. Competitors were encouraged to take part in their favourite contests while the rest of their team cheered them on.

Rather than egg and spoon, three legged and sack races, residents took part in crazy golf, boules and skittles. The most popular competition proved to be the ‘duck firing range’. Competitors were encouraged to shoot rubber ducks off their perch using water pistols.

Organiser Lois Wild, the village’s events co-ordinator, said: “The game got particularly competitive with people demanding to ‘have another go’ to try and beat their time. As one resident said ‘you can’t beat any game involving water’.”

Resident Elizabeth Sharratt proved the sharpest shooter knocking all four ducks off in under three seconds, and winning top marks for the blue team. But her efforts weren’t enough to see off strong competition from the Reds in other disciplines who battled through to win the overall contest.

People from the wider community joined in the fun too with youngsters from Tregony arriving with vicar Sian Yates and a very welcome tray of home-baked cupcakes.

“The children arrived with cupcakes but were commandeered by the teams to join in,” said Lois. “The whole afternoon became a wonderful inter-generational event.”

Captain of the Red team Alison Midwood was presented with the winners’ trophy by Village Manager Derek Pashley and her entire team were rewarded with medals.

“The day not only bought out the competitive side of our residents, it brought out the child in all of us!” said Lois. “In true school sports day style the event will return next year to see if the Reds can retain their title.”
