Dr Hilary Jones offers prostate cancer advice

Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men. In the UK, 36,000 men are diagnosed with prostate cancer every year and there are over 250,000 men living with the disease today. But how much do you know about the disease, the impact it can have on your life and are you or the men in your life at risk by not knowing the possible signs and symptoms of this increasingly common disease?
Because of where the prostate sits in the body many men are often reluctant to discuss any problems which may be affecting ‘down there’, simply dismissing the discomfort as part of getting older. With this in mind it is important that individuals and partners alike are aware of the possible signs and symptoms of the disease and feel able to discuss any concerns they may have freely with their GP.
Although prostate cancer mainly affects men over 50, it is important that everyone is aware of the possible signs and symptoms of the disease – particularly if you are at a greater risk.
Although not symptoms of prostate cancer specifically, common signs that there is a problem with the prostate can include; a weak urine flow, needing to urinate more often, especially at night, a feeling that your bladder has not emptied properly, new pain in the lower back, hips or pelvis, and in some cases blood in the urine or semen - but this is very rare.
Bladder weakness, also known as urinary incontinence, affects more than three million men in the UK. The side effects of some treatments for prostate cancer can also mean that men continue to experience bladder weakness.
In recognition of this, The Prostate Cancer Charity has teamed up with TENA, the UK’s leading bladder weakness brand, as part of their ongoing campaign to get people talking openly about this once taboo condition.
