An Indian summer is on its way, according to a weather expert. with Britain expected to be hotter than Barcelona and southern France over the next month.

Whilst the majority of us love lounging around in the sunshine, spare a thought for those who work in the great outdoors who could be at risk from overexposure. This is why, contrary to the stereotypical builder who drinks copious amounts of tea, you’re more likely to see Persimmon Homes construction staff across the Malmesbury region slapping on the sunscreen whilst they work.

According to Cancer Research UK, the rate of men dying from the deadliest form of skin cancer has doubled over the past three decades, yet the cancer is preventable if people avoid sunburn, the charity said.

Bryan Leeming, construction director for Malmesbury-based Persimmon Homes Wessex, said: “We take the health and safety of all our workers extremely seriously and following the recent spell of hot, sunny weather feel that now is a good time to spread the ‘stay safe’ message to everyone who works outdoors.

“Whilst we all love the sunshine and take every advantage of the rays in an attempt to get a golden glow, sun exposure is no light issue and is something which needs to be taken far more seriously.”

Cancer Research UK figures also reveal that in the late 70s fewer than 400 (1.5 per 100,000) men died from melanoma but now more than 1100 (3.1 per 100,000) men are dying from the disease. Pauline Fletcher, Persimmon’s regional sales director, adds: “These figures are worrying and what people don’t realise is that they can still burn on a day when there is a thin layer of scattered cloud.

“We are encouraging all of our construction workers to apply sunscreen before the working day begins and to keep applying at regular intervals.”

Persimmon Homes Wessex is currently building in Devizes, Frome, Malmesbury, Melksham, Salisbury, Swindon, Trowbridge, Warminster, and Wootton Bassett. For information about your nearest development, visit: persimmonhomes.com
