Pet owners put health of animals before their own

Animal-loving Brits are putting the wellbeing of their pets ahead of themselves, according to research from Tesco Pet Insurance.

The research reveals that nearly half (46%) of all UK pet owners have insurance for their pooch or moggie compared to 35% covering their own health with insurance. Some 7% of pet owners would even consider cancelling their own health insurance policy if extra money was required for vet bills.

Pet owners are also happy to consider making personal sacrifices in their lives to ensure that their pets receive the best possible treatment. Over a fifth of pet owners would cancel their gym membership if the money was required for their pet's fitness while a third would make a more beneficial sacrifice for their health and give up alcohol or cigarettes.

Nearly half (47%) would cut down on nights out to save cash, while almost a third of dog and cat owners (29%) would go further and skip their annual holiday to safeguard their pet's wellbeing. A quarter would even be willing to go into debt to safeguard their well-being.

Only 8% would contemplate having their pet put down if faced with an expensive vet bill.

Comparisons across the country reveal that pet lovers in Portsmouth are most likely (41%) to cut back on their own fitness plan in the gym and scrap their membership to pay for vet treatment. Pet owners in Leicester are the most likely (35%) to sacrifice their annual holiday for the health of their animal, while those in Southampton are those most likely to ask a friend or family member for a loan to help cover the cost.

GMTV vet Dr Scott Miller said: "For many people, pets are seen as members of the family. Just as a sick child can cause a parent unbelievable worry, a poorly pet can create anxiety and concern for owners, both emotionally and financially.

"While giving your pet love and attention is important, it is essential that their health and wellbeing are carefully monitored.  Regular trips to the vet will ensure that any issues or illnesses are spotted early and can prevent costly bills in the event of major treatment being required."

Julie Hopes, General Insurance Director at Tesco Bank said "Ensuring that your pet has access to any veterinary treatment it may require, can provide peace of mind and it needn't cost the earth. Pet insurance provides cover for a range of ailments and at Tesco, we don't change the policy conditions just because your pet gets older."
