September 14 is 'big turn on' for Brits

Tuesday 14 September is officially the day of 'The Big Turn On' - when the majority of Brits awaken their heating from its summer slumber and boilers across the country will whir back into action.

Statistics from npower hometeam, which installs, services and repairs boilers, show that the majority of the British public flip the switch on their heating on this date year on year. The company recorded a significant increase in calls on the 14th September in 2008 and 2009, as Brits discovered their boilers had given up the ghost while they’d been enjoying the Great British Summer, and is expecting a similar rise this September.

As last month was reportedly the coldest August in 17 years, with the summer sunshine quickly disappearing under a rain cloud, it’s easy to see why many of us are making the move to keep warm so early on in autumn.*

Richard Cotton, head of sales for npower hometeam, comments, “The unpredictability of British weather often leaves us tempted to reach for the heating in the first few weeks of September. But many homeowners don’t consider that their heating system has been dormant for some time after a hard winter’s work that lasted well into the start of the year. In order to kick start the season, it’s a good idea to get your boiler serviced to make sure it’s operating safely and efficiently.

“Having your boiler serviced should be an annual event in preparation for the colder months. It’s vital to make sure your boiler is in good working order and fix any problems early in the season, before the weather takes a turn for the worst and you need your heating system on a daily basis.”

npower gas and electricity customers can also benefit from npower hometeam 50 boiler care flexi which is priced exactly the same as British Gas’ Homecare Flexi 100. It’s £10.50 a month with a fixed fee of £50 per repair, and offers the same service – except for one important difference – npower’s 50% No Call Out Cash Back.

If you don’t call out npower hometeam to work on your boiler during the 12 month agreement period npower returns 50% of the cost of your annual membership to you after your year’s anniversary. Also included in npower hometeam 50 is an annual boiler service, usually worth £74 - when combined with the 50% (£63) cash back, customers could be quids in if they don’t need to call out an engineer.
