Miller Homes encourages community cohesion

Having good neighbours is high on most people’s lists when they move home and with International Day of Peace just around the corner (21st September), Miller Homes is encouraging its residents to build friendships and establish communities on all of its developments throughout the region.
Steve McElroy, sales director for Miller Homes Yorkshire said: “New developments are perfect for meeting new people and creating long lasting friendships. We are keen to encourage our residents to meet each other and often organise community based activities for the whole development to enjoy.”
The award-winning house builder not only organises activities but has also launched “mymillerstreet”, a website which enables residents on Miller Homes’ developments to get to know their neighbours online.
“Since its inception in 2007 “mymillerstreet” has been tremendously useful in allowing residents to make those first introductions,” commented Steve. “In addition, community groups, book clubs and babysitting circles have all been established at various developments and it has helped restore that traditional sense of community amongst our residents.
“With International Day of Peace soon upon us, what better way to celebrate the day than with an invitation to your neighbour for an introductory coffee and chat?”
In support of the annual International Day of Peace, Miller Homes has developed five top tips for getting to know and getting on with your neighbours!
1 – Introduce yourself to your new neighbours when either one of you move in, it’s a great way to break the ice! Be friendly and say 'hello' when you see them. This will show them that you are open and approachable.
2 – Look after the outside of your home, as this is a common source of neighbourly disputes, it will also help to keep your development looking like new!
3 – If you are planning a party or celebration, tell your neighbours about it in advance, alternatively invite them along, but be sure to keep nose levels to a minimum particularly if it continues into the night.
4 – Make sure a key holder is available for burglar alarms whilst you are away.
5 – Show an interest in your neighbours and your community by being involved in community groups or supporting them where appropriate.
For those not keen on breaking the ice with new neighbours Miller Homes has made it easy with its Recommend a Friend initiative, which means that you could have your best friend living right next door and earn £1,000 in the process!
