Darlingtons look to Volvo for cost-effective solution

Cheshire-based, salt importers and distributors, Darlington’s Group have recently taken delivery of six FH-500 tractor units, basing their decision on the whole-life costs and savings that the new vehicles will bring.
Having seen one of their major clients fall into receivership earlier this year, Darlington’s were not only left with the prospect of losing one of their biggest customers, but were also left with over £500,000 worth of debt.
Whilst this has had a dramatic knock-on effect throughout the supply chain, Darlington’s Group insisted that they will remain strong and ride out the storm.
Determined to continue trading and minimise the impact that the unforeseen circumstances have had on the businesses’ 80 years of trading, Darlington’s Managing Director, Keith Jones explained, “Losing a major customer to the recession has had a significant impact on our business as well as a knock-on effect to our suppliers. It has forced us to look at all aspects of the business’s expenditure and has had unavoidable consequences.”
One of the first areas to be scrutinised was the company’s transport costs. Operating 27 vehicles, Keith explained that, “a number of our older vehicles were costing us a considerable amount in repair and maintenance. We needed to find an alternative solution.”
Searching for a cost effective answer has lead the group to leasing six vehicles from local Volvo Dealership Thomas Hardie Commercials.
Keith explained, “Like a number of our suppliers, Thomas Hardie has been very flexible in their approach. Recognising our current situation, Thomas Hardie arranged an excellent deal, for which we are very grateful.”
All the six Euro-5 FH-500 6x2 tractor units have been specified with Globetrotter XL Cabs, I-Shift automated gearbox as well as a 2-year repair and maintenance contract at Thomas Hardie Commercials - Deeside. Keith commented that, “The whole package, especially the repair and maintenance agreement provided tremendous value.”
Although recent events have no doubt set the company back, Darlington’s are very optimistic about the future. The group has also welcomed a number of new customers over recent months, which will help maximise the productivity of the new additions.
Keith concluded, “We are very appreciative to all of our loyal customers and suppliers, on behalf of Darlington’s Group we would like to thank everyone for their continued support.”
