UK holidaymakers too embarrassed to haggle

28th September 2010 Print

Recent research by travel agent sunshine.co.uk has revealed that over half of UK holidaymakers are too embarrassed to haggle over prices when making purchases with their travel money whilst on holiday.

Despite bartering being a skill that could help UK holidaymakers make their travel money go further 54 per cent of UK travellers said that they would never haggle the price down when buying goods abroad.

Of those that have plucked up the courage to haggle whilst abroad, people were most likely to barter when spending their travel money on electrical goods with 34 per cent having received a discount on items such as MP3 players. The second most popular items haggled over are clothes with 21 per cent of holiday makers getting a bargain on fashion items for their travel money.

Post Office Travel Money advises travellers to research prices before going on holiday to ensure they can budget their travel money effectively for holiday spending.

Post Office Travel Money also reminds travellers that they may have more foreign currency to barter with if they avoid getting their travel money at airport bureaux de change. UK holidaymakers can usually get more completive foreign exchange rates by purchasing foreign currency in advance, and also avoid any commission fees typically incurred on foreign currency exchange at the airport.
