Sky 3D channel launch
Michael Phillips of Digitalchoices.co.uk comments on the launch of Sky's new dedicated 3D TV channel: "Anyone looking for a 3D TV package now has the option of either Virgin Media or Sky. Its horses for courses: Virgin Media's channel is focusing, at least initially, on on-demand 3D movies whilst Sky's new 3D channel will feature movies, sports and other entertainment.
"When it comes to cost, the 3D offerings from both providers are competitively priced. Sky World subscribers with a Sky+HD box will be able to get everything, including up to 50 high-definition channels and the dedicated 3D channel, for £61 a month. The on-demand 3D movie service from Virgin Media is available to homes with either a V+HD or V HD set-top box, and films are available to ‘rent' for 24 hours for just £5.99.
"To watch cinema 3D blockbusters like Avatar and Alice in Wonderland at home, you'll have to invest in a 3D TV and 3D compatible glasses. A cheap 3D ready TV set will currently set you back around £800, though larger models cost a lot more. You'll also need to buy some 3D glasses, which can cost up to £150, depending on the type.
"The hardware costs may discourage consumers from upgrading from high-definition (HD) to 3D. However despite the hefty price tag, retailers have said the take-up of 3D TV sets has been steady, with John Lewis stating that 15% of all +40inch new TVs sold were 3D ready.
"3D TV is certainly an exciting new era of television viewing, but we predict that these services will initially appeal to early adopters and tech-lovers rather than the masses. As additional content becomes available via Sky and Virgin Media however, subscriptions will increase - just as they did with their high-definition services."
