New study reveals our “sights of a lifetime”

Ultralase, the laser eye specialist, has conducted a unique study into exactly what our “sights of a lifetime” really are.
The research, which questioned more than 1,000 people across the UK, was conducted by Ultralase as part of its campaign to encourage the 33.3 million people currently wearing glasses or contacts in the UK to enjoy life’s experiences to the full and in all their clarity – whatever they may be.
It appears that you don’t necessarily have to travel thousands of miles for the ultimate ‘eye opening sight’, with 42% of people claiming they’ve experienced it right here in the UK with friends or family, coming above experiences from a foreign holiday (36%).
Top sights of a lifetime:
1. Witnessing the birth of your child
2. Getting married and seeing your partner at the alter
3. Watching your sports team achieve glory
4. The view of a tropical beach while on holiday
5. Watching an animal in the wild
6. Going to a music festival and seeing your favourite band
7. The Pyramids
8. The Grand Canyon
9. Niagara Falls
10. Diving with sharks
The Lake District is our best loved UK-sight with 35% calling it their favourite beauty-spot, closely followed by the Yorkshire Dales with 18% of votes. Unexpectedly the Angel of the North came bottom of the pile, with just 2% of votes!
People were also asked about the sights they most hate, and nearly half the British public detest the sight of politicians and reality TV stars while surprisingly, just 5% said traffic wardens make their skin crawl, with rats also coming in with a relatively low quarter of votes. For almost half of the women questioned, it’s the sight of spiders which causes most fear, while men prefer to loathe D-list celebrities (35%).
TV presenter and naturalist, Chris Packham, who is supporting the campaign, said: “These survey results really do highlight how many amazing sights are waiting for us right on our great British doorstep. Throughout my career I’ve studied wildlife and been involved in filming some truly amazing sights. Whilst I witnessed some of these in exotic and wild locations, a huge number have been quite literally in my back yard; it’s just about having some patience, a sharp lookout and grabbing every opportunity available to you.
“There’s no doubting, having first-rate eyesight is key to really appreciating and making the most of all the wonderful sights that are out there. The quality of our experiences are greatly enriched by what we see.”
