Virgin Trains scoops top RSPCA catering award

18th October 2010 Print

The RSPCA Good Business Awards, that recognises the most animal friendly businesses in the UK’s fashion and food retail industries, has awarded Virgin Trains the top catering award.

Fighting off stiff competition, Virgin Trains took home the award for their animal welfare-friendly breakfast.

The breakfast menu includes free range eggs and poultry and meat reared to RSPCA welfare standards under the Freedom Food scheme or free range standards; Virgin Trains are the only UK train operator to show a commitment to animal welfare in its on-board catering facilities. A rigorous judging panel, including Andrew Opie, Director of food and consumer policy at the British Retail Consortium, and Richard Johnson, an award-winning journalist and broadcaster, hand picked Virgin Trains as ‘best in show’ in the catering category.

Nic Cuthbertson, Product Development Manager at Virgin Trains, says: “Animal welfare is incredibly important to everyone here at Virgin Trains and we are absolutely delighted with our award win.

“With tens of millions of livestock and hundreds of millions of poultry used in UK food production every year, animal welfare is a big issue and it is essential that market leaders, such as Virgin Trains, set an example to the rest of the catering industry.”
