A new apprenticeship scheme is giving NVQ students in Liverpool the chance to gain firsthand experience of working in the construction industry.

The scheme, which is run by David Wilson Homes North West in partnership with Liverpool City Council and training provider, North Liverpool Regeneration Company, allows local NVQ students to take up an apprenticeship in their chosen trade on a Housing Market Renewal site in North Liverpool, delivered David Wilson Homes.

As part of the NVQ courses, which can be studied in a variety of areas of the construction industry, including brick laying, plastering and joinery, each student must complete a 16 week work experience placement. This allows students to gain hands on experience of the working world and put the skills they have learnt in the classroom into practice in a real life setting.

Managing director at David Wilson Homes North West, Graham Swann, comments: “We are delighted to be involved in the apprenticeship scheme which helps provide work for young people from Liverpool, and allow them to gain firsthand experience of working in the sector. Work experience is a valuable part of any career and schemes like this are incredibly important to the future of the industry, helping to ensure that those who chose construction for their career begin working, having gained the right skills and experience.

“We will shortly be launching a new development in Liverpool, St John’s Place, so it is fantastic to be able to offer young people from the area the chance to really contribute to the regeneration of the area in which they grew up.”

Nicola Kelly, project manager at North Liverpool Regeneration Company comments: “North Liverpool Regeneration Company (NLRCo) is looking forward to launching the partnership with David Wilson Homes in early September 2010. The partnership will generate and continue to create ‘real life’ work experience for are apprentices in order for them to gain the relevant skills that they require to become a fully qualified trades person. NLRCo see the strength of the partnership as supporting and creating employment opportunities for young people within the construction industry and also supporting them to gain further qualification and to help make their future careers more stainable for the future.”

Liverpool City Council Leader, Joe Anderson, comments: “The City Council is committed to new apprenticeship opportunities being provided for young people in Liverpool. This unique partnership with David Wilson Homes North West and North Liverpool Regeneration Company will allow local students to gain valuable experience of working on and contributing to local housing construction over the coming years.”

Graham Swann concludes: “At David Wilson Homes North West we are fully committed to ensuring that our new developments provide great opportunities for local people to access employment and training. We look forward to seeing the first apprentice begin work.”
