Top tips for protecting your property

1st November 2010 Print

As the winter nights draw in, the UK's leading rural insurer NFU Mutual is advising homeowners to check they have the best level of protection, as vandalism and malicious damage claims typically increase at this time of year.

Last November NFU Mutual saw buildings insurance claims increase by 52% as a result of incidents like broken windows and damaged doors, while contents insurance claims also jumped above the monthly average by more than 20% during this time.

Unfortunately, nearly a quarter of home insurance policies do not cover emergency repairs as standard. Explaining the importance of reviewing policies and how homeowners can protect their properties, Paul Richardson, home insurance specialist at NFU Mutual, said:

"Once the clocks turn back on 31st October the season of long, dark nights begins. Unfortunately, the onset of fewer daylight hours typically leads to an increase in vandalism and malicious damage.

"Our advice to homeowners is to remain vigilant. Simple precautions like security lighting can be an effective deterrent to anyone paying your home unwanted attention. If you have a gate to your garden or driveway, keep it closed as unwanted intruders will be less likely to trespass.

"It's also vital homeowners check their insurance policies to make sure they have the right level of protection. While broken glass in windows and doors is likely to be one of the items most claimed for this November, 24 per cent of buildings insurance policies do not provide a day and night repairs service as standard."

NFU Mutual provides extensive insurance cover at a fair price and with a first class service. The NFU Mutual Home and Lifestyle Insurance does include an emergency repairs feature, which will ensure common problems like broken windows are fixed immediately.

To help reduce the chance of becoming a victim of vandalism and malicious crime this winter, NFU Mutual highlights a number of measures to help homeowners improve their security.

Close gates to your garden or driveway
Consider outside security lighting
Install an alarm system accredited by UKAS
When installing alarm systems use a certified installer from NSI or SSAIB
Fit and use insurance approved security locks
Fit high security heavy-duty padlocks to garages and outbuildings
