McGrath Group goes for gold with Volvo FM

Leading East London and Essex-based waste management specialists McGrath Group are putting their new Volvo FM 8x4 Refuse Collection Vehicle through its paces in the run-up to the London 2012 Olympics.
The new Volvo eight-wheeler joins a fleet of 45 trucks at McGrath’s Hackney headquarters, which includes 40 Volvos with FLE, FM12 and FM13 chassis among them.
McGrath’s Fleet Manager, John McDaid said: “We’ve got plenty of experience with Volvo multi-wheelers, so we know they are up to the job. But this is the first new Volvo we’ve taken with an RCV body.”
The completed truck, with Geesink Norba RCV superstructure, was supplied by the Enfield depot of Volvo Truck and Bus Centre London.
The FM has been set to work on a number of waste and recycling contracts and it will be well into its stride by the time it starts to work on the construction of the Olympic athletes’ village when the Games get under way in 2012.
Volvo’s are already a firm favourite with the McGrath drivers as John McDaid explained, “Our drivers are big fans of the Volvo FM and the I-Shift automated gearbox which makes driving a lot easier in the urban environment we operate in. It’s mainly inside the M25.” He added, “We have the I-Shift on a number of hook-loaders and it’s proved to be a winner.”
Starting as a modest skip hire company back in 1972, the McGrath Group has grown into one of the region’s biggest waste management firms with separate concrete, demolition and recycling operations.
