Culinary attack at Lincoln Christmas Market
The sound of sizzling bratwurst sausages, the festive aroma of warm mulled wine and the spectacle of brightly coloured sweet treats – a culinary attack on the senses will be on offer at this year’s Lincoln Christmas Market.
Event organisers at the City of Lincoln Council have continued to secure local Lincolnshire food producers with an expanding Lincolnshire Larder at the Lawn. Always a very popular section with the market's 170,000 visitors, the Lincolnshire Larder has newcomers this year including Lincoln company Angel Desserts, as well as returning favourites like FW Read and Sons with their well-loved Lincolnshire Poacher cheese and Oslinc with their famous ostrich products.
Lydia Rusling from Tastes of Lincolnshire said: “A selection of Lincolnshire produce at this year's Christmas market will give visitors that come to the county for the market the opportunity to 'taste Lincolnshire'! As a major food producing county, the Lincolnshire Larder is a great addition to the popular market and visitors can take a selection of seasonal produce away with them to remember their visit.”
Stalls with fabulous ‘foodie’ gifts include specialist beers, wines and cheeses, traditional sweets, five bird roasts, chutneys and even gourmet liquorice and gift hampers. Treats to eat on the day include hot chestnuts and roasted nuts, mince pies, crepes, traditional Cornish pasties and a chocolate fountain.
Nick Woods of Fire Foods, who specialise in chilli based products, is returning to the market after a successful 2009 event: “We had a stall at the market last year and the response was phenomenal. It’s great to be part of the Lincolnshire Larder where local produce is celebrated and showcased. We’ve got some super hot foods for sale, stuff that will really blow your mind and are ideal gifts for dads and uncles. We can’t wait to be there, it’s a fabulous atmosphere and it’s a real pleasure to be involved.”
As Lincoln was the first German Christmas market in the UK, the idea born from the city’s twinning with Neustadt-an-der-Weinstrasse, visitors are sure to enjoy the German food and drink on offer, including the ever popular bratwurst sausages, ghluwein and German biscuits, which make for ideal snacks at the event itself and interesting Christmas gifts. On the corner of Westgate and Union Road will be themed German Area, selling bratwursts.
Amanda Batham, Events Team Leader at the City of Lincoln Council, said: “Lincolnshire is a county celebrated for its food produce, so we are keen to promote this to all our local, national and international visitors. The Lincolnshire Larder has grown this year, with more local producers coming forward to be part of this special event. We’re also concentrating many of the outlets to three specific food courts, helping visitors to make their selection of what to eat on the day. We have such a wide variety of festive food stalls, there’s certain to be something that will make the perfect Christmas gift for food lovers.”
