Yorkshire Building Society joins the fight against teenage cancer

25th November 2010 Print

Every day in the UK, six young people aged 13 to 24 are told they have cancer.  This festive season actress Angela Griffin is joining forces with Yorkshire Building Society and Teenage Cancer Trust in a fight to help the 2,100 teenagers diagnosed with cancer every year.

Throughout December every single one of Yorkshire, Chelsea and Barnsley Building Society branches and agencies will be coming together to launch the ‘Break away from Teenage Cancer' Appeal and raise money for Teenage Cancer Trust.  Anyone who calls into one of the Society's 178 branches or 77 agencies can help by purchasing adorable cuddly reindeer stocking fillers or a choice of four collectable, retro Rainbow badges.

Teenage Cancer Trust, the national charity, exists to improve the lives of teenagers and young adults diagnosed with cancer. The charity understands that young people have the best chance of a positive outcome if they are treated by teenage cancer experts in an environment tailored to their needs. So they fund and build specialist units in NHS hospitals that are designed with teenagers in mind. As well as specialist units, Teenage Cancer Trust funds and organises a number of other services all with the same goal - to help young people fight cancer.

Yorkshire Building Society will be using the festive period to raise money for a very special Teenage Cancer Trust event.  All the money raised in the ‘Break away from Teenage Cancer' Appeal will go directly towards funding Teenage Cancer Trust's annual gathering that brings together over 400 young people who have, or have had cancer. The weekend away gives them the chance to share experiences as well as educating them about their disease.

The funds raised by staff and customers of the Yorkshire Building Society will be matched pound for pound by the Yorkshire Building Society Charitable Foundation meaning every pound donated automatically becomes two pounds for the charity!

Angela Griffin who is supporting the Yorkshire Building Society's ‘Break away from Teenage Cancer' campaign said: "I'm proud to be backing Yorkshire Building Society and Teenage Cancer Trust in their fight against teenage cancer.  Young people fighting cancer need all the help and support they can get to help them through a really tough time and put them back on track towards a bright future.  I hope people will call into a Yorkshire, Chelsea or Barnsley Building Society or agencies and help us in our fight against teenage cancer."
