Lack of loft and cavity wall insulation costs Brits £2bn

9th December 2010 Print

Figures from Confused.com suggest that Brits are needlessly wasting billions with inadequate insulation.

Of the 26.5 million homes in the UK, only 13 million have loft insulation and only 10 million have cavity wall insulation. Figures suggest households can save £145 per year for loft insulation and £110 for cavity wall insulation on their energy bills, meaning the nation could be collectively wasting an estimated £2 billion.

Lisa Greenfield, energy analyst at Confused.com says: "All this snow means now is the perfect time for households to assess their homes and check if they need better insulation.  A quick look at the roof will give them a clue, if the snow has melted then heat is needlessly escaping. It is worth getting in touch with the local council to check eligibility for grants. Any household with a resident aged 70 or over, qualifies for a 100% grant for insulation. These things only need to be done once, and can pay for themselves within a couple of years."
