Drivers warned to brace themselves for 3 pm 'danger zone'
Lloyds TSB Insurance is warning British motorists to brace themselves for a huge leap in car accidents this weekend as the clock change catches motorists off guard and takes its toll on the country's roads.Following the sudden shift to darker nights, the insurer is predicting a 20 per cent hike in car accident claims, with the 'danger zone' likely to be between 3pm and 6pm on Sunday afternoon.
Last year, during October and November, following the end of 'British Summer Time', Lloyds TSB Insurance car insurance claims leapt by almost a fifth (18 per cent) and this year's rise is expected to be at least as high.
Phil Loney, managing director, Lloyds TSB Insurance said: "The colder weather combined with the darker nights can be a lethal cocktail on the roads. Even though the clocks go back every year, drivers still seem to be ill prepared. Many are not ready to face the hazards of dark winter evenings and risk minor accidents - or worse - as a result.
"All the evidence shows that the most dangerous time for driving is the afternoon following the clock change, but we'd urge drivers to be especially careful right through the winter months. Preparation is everything, so drivers need to make sure their car is ready to face the harsh conditions, and that they are fully insured."
