UK drivers ‘trick’ their satnav systems
Over 3.5 million UK drivers deliberately take the wrong route when out driving in an attempt to trick their satellite navigation technology, according to research released by Saga Motor Insurance.Today’s over 50s are the most mischievous, with 76% of owners in this age group admitting to taking the odd shortcut or slip road in order to confuse their systems.
The research also revealed that, instead of being a welcome addition to road navigation, 16% of satnav users admit they find them a distraction when out on the road, and over a third don’t even trust them to take them the right way!
However, it seems that these systems can act as a reassurance too – a fifth of users say they find their satnavs comforting, even if they already know the way. As well as sending them on the quickest and most direct journey, almost a quarter of drivers say they rely on their satnav system to help them avoid traffic blackspots and speed cameras.
The majority of motorists would prefer a woman’s voice on their satnav to accompany them on their journey (56%) with Joanna Lumley being chosen as the most popular celebrity voice (18%). The most popular male voice was Sean Connery with almost one in 10 opting for his dulcet tones.
Many Brits felt that their satnav should display some manners, just under half said they would like their systems to say ‘please’ and thank you’ when giving instructions! Two thirds of motorists considered the road safety implications - calling for it to be made an offence to tamper with satnav systems whilst on the road.
