Portugal named best value holiday destination

1st February 2011 Print

Portugal offers the best value to UK travellers, according to the newest Annual Post Office Travel Services Holiday Money Report.

The country recorded the lowest prices for holiday costs in the survey, which looks at 36 different holiday destinations around the world.

The Post Office's report compares the total cost of eight common holiday purchases: cup of coffee, bottle of local beer, bottle of cola, 1.5 litre bottle of mineral water, sun cream, insect repellent, pack of cigarettes and a three-course evening meal for two. Portugal's bill fell by 49 percent from last year, totalling only £32.84.

Sarah Munro, Post Office Head of Travel Money, says, "Travellers looking for best value holidays will get the most for their money in Portugal. It is great to see such an affordable option in Europe - especially in the tough economic climate, when people need it most."

As other countries begin to emerge from the recession and start raising holiday prices, Portugal remains a quality destination that offers very good value for money. It continues to welcome all types of UK tourists who seek to experience an affordable, diverse offering, such as sunshine and beach resorts, lively city breaks, golf and sailing, and historical attractions.

The Post Office Holiday Money Report, published by the UK's largest provider of travel money, reviews travel trends for the past 12 months and identifies holiday hotspots for 2011, based on exchange rate trends and resort costs.
