There’s more to Texas than cowboys
Texas is more than cowboys, bustling metropolitan cities and wide open spaces.
Throughout the year a number of festivals take place to show off the unique culture and heritage, landscape and unusual side of the lone star state.
Biking enthusiasts call the Big Bend Open Road Race, one of the most exciting open road races in the world. Taking place 20th to 23rd April 2011, the event draws competitors from across the US, Canada and the rest of the world to match their skills against 118 miles of the twists and turns on the open road. There are also a number of activities to keep spectators entertained during the event, including a car show and a parade. See: bborr.com
The Texas Hill Country songwriting festival, Kerrville Folk Festival, features more than 100 songwriters with their bands in concert from 26th May to 12th June 2011. During the festival there will be a song writing competition, children’s concerts, seminars and workshops; arts, crafts and food stalls, including Texan barbeques. See: kerrville-music.com
Without forgetting Texas’ cowboy culture the National Cow Calling Contest and Steak Cook-Off is held in Miami, Texas from 3rd to 5th June 2011. Competitors from across Texas will compete in a cow calling contest, steak cook-off and a Texas Hold ‘Em Tournament.
Texas’ own Tomato Festival is held in Jacksonville on 11th June 2011. People from across the state will come together to celebrate everything dedicated to the red fruit. Amongst the many activities throughout the day, there will be a home grown tomato contest, tomato eating contest and a tomato peeling contest. See: jacksonvilletexas.com
The Parker County Peach Festival in Weatherford on the 9th July 2011 is a celebration of the Parker County peach. During the day there will be live entertainment across three stages, children’s activities, a peach pedal bike ride, “42” domino tournament and over 200 arts, crafts, food and activity stalls. One of the US’ oldest and largest one day endurance cycling events, the Hotter ‘N’ Hell Hundred, begins at 7am on 27th August 2011. The event will challenge fitness oriented riders and bicycle racers at Wichita Falls who come from across the US and the globe, to race across 100 miles during the hottest time of the year in Texas.
