Neighbours are a girl's best friend in Bristol

Neighbours are a girl's best friend

Just like Susan, Bree and Gabby from the popular ‘Desperate Housewives’ TV programme Bristol women have found that neighbours can become good friends, with almost 70 per cent saying they ‘love’ or ‘like’ their neighbours.

The survey, carried out by Taylor Wimpey Bristol, found that like the characters from the fictional Wisteria Lane there is a correlation between how women feel about the area they live in and the relationship they strike up with their neighbours, as eight out of ten women who ‘love’ living in their current location also ‘love’ or ‘like’ the people next door.

However, perhaps not surprising in today’s busy world 28 per cent of Bristol women have ‘never met’ their neighbours or ‘don’t really know them’.

When it came to reasons for moving, the survey by the leading housebuilder found that 35 per cent wanted to ‘live in a different area’ while the majority (60 per cent) were desperate to move to a bigger property. Some simply want ‘a nicer home’ (27 per cent), while one in four women want a home that has ‘better insulation’.

Richard Goad, sales and marketing director for Taylor Wimpey Bristol, said: “Good neighbours bring a good community spirit and at Taylor Wimpey we understand this and endeavour to support it at our developments. Buying a new home means residents can build up their own community from scratch, and, naturally, they’ll be buying a home they can make their own and one that’s well insulated and energy efficient.”

When it comes to making the decision to move house it seems there are similarities to Susan, Bree and Gabby. Half make it a joint decision with a partner / husband - similar to Susan and Mike, 13 per cent make it their own decision - as would be typical of Gabby, and for 7 per cent it’s decided by their significant other - as can be imagined with Bree. Interestingly, once the decision to move has been made women have more influence on the house and location they will move to (20 per cent) compared to their partners (5 per cent).

Richard Goad concluded: “If first time buyers in Bristol don’t have a bank account like Gabby’s Taylor Wimpey has a range of financial schemes across the region to make moving more affordable. Easystart* enables purchasers to own 100% of their home for 85% of the price on selected properties up to £250,000. Homebuyers simply pay a 5% deposit to secure the property and pay 80% of the purchase price via their prearranged mortgage.

“For buyers who have a 5% deposit but need more, Taylor Wimpey’s Deposit Match* will be right up their street as the house builder can loan up to an additional 5% to match the deposit and buyers with up to 10% deposit could get it doubled via our interest free loan. For women ‘desperate’ to move but unable to sell their current property our Part Exchange* scheme could get them moving in to their dream home in no time – saving stress and estate agent fees too.”
