UK sunshine warms consumer interest in garden products

31st March 2011 Print

Last week’s unseasonably warm weather has led to an early surge in interest for garden products, according to Idealo.co.uk.

With temperatures reaching a balmy 18C (65F) for March, the price comparison site has seen a rapid increase in searches for lawnmowers up a staggering 341% on last month. Petrol, electric and newer robotic models are all doing well.

Relaxing outdoors is also high on the agenda for UK consumers. Searches for garden furniture have climbed by 112 percent while barbecue interest is up 69 per cent on February.

With bank holiday season approaching and an extra day off on April 29, consumers appear to be getting their gardens in order earlier this year ready to enjoy the longer weekends. In comparison to March 2010, garden furniture (up 54 per cent), barbecues (up 76 per cent), sheds (up 98 per cent) and lawnmowers (76 per cent) are seeing much higher interest this month.

“Sunny weather is always an economy booster as consumers feel the need to refresh their wardrobes and homes,” said Matt Hopkins at Idealo.co.uk. “It’s great to see that the summer feeling has come a little earlier this year. Knowing how unpredictable the UK’s weather can be though I just hope the sun hangs around long enough for everyone to put their new purchases to good use,” he added.
