Stay grounded when flying high this summer

With summer now almost upon us, many of us have one thing on our mind – our annual summer holiday. As we can’t rely on the British summer to deliver the sunshine, many of us choose to visit warmer countries for our well deserved summer holiday.
Whether it’s a short haul hop to Europe or a long haul trip to Oz, a flight is more often than not, an unavoidable part of our holiday. For many flying can be a fearful experience that people dread.
A recent Bach Original Flower Essences survey revealed that one in five (20%) of us state mechanical failure as top on our worry list when it comes to flying. However the fact that aircrafts must legally adhere to regular inspections, replacements and maintenance of all parts by fully trained ground crew in order to keep the aircraft airworthy for passengers, should put your mind at ease.
Next down the worry list is hijacking and terrorism with one in ten (10%) people stating this as their biggest fear when it comes to flying. However despite public opinion the number of terrorism acts on board flights has decreased with time, due to increased airport security measures.
Interestingly the survey revealed that the number of people that fear take off the most when flying is double that of those who state landing as their biggest flying fear (6% compared to 3%). This could be linked to the feelings that accompany take off including movement of the stomach and popping ears as the plane ascends into the air. It can also be down to the feeling of losing touch with the ground. Thankfully these feelings soon subside once you are flying high, and it may be comforting to know that sucking sweets can help to prevent your ears from popping during take off.
Almost one in ten (9%) state turbulence as their biggest worry, but don’t be thrown by turbulence. It’s generally nothing to worry about, it’s just an air pocket that the airplane is travelling through and aircrafts have been built to last sudden strain caused by turbulence.
