Algarve to host third round of FIA GT1 championship

Europe’s most famous secret, the Algarve will host the third round of the FIA GT1 World Championship from 6th to 8th May.  

Regarded as one of the most important of the international sporting calendar, the event will see over 160 drivers and 120 cars battling it out over the three days to take the chequered flag. 

Highlight races of the championship include: GT3 category, the Mini Challenge and the Championship Circuit Portugal plus there will be loads of activities to keep the young and young at heart entertained off the track, including kart races, helicopter rides, hot laps and children’s games.  

The championship will take place at the Algarve International Raceway, one of Europe's most modern circuits. The circuit is perfectly crafted by man and nature to meet any challenge and even offers 64 different paths, all with the picturesque backdrop of the Atlantic.

Taking pole position for Portugal is driver Paulo Pinheiro, who will team with Roger Green for the GT3 class.

Pinheiro said “this is one of the most important events of the year; it will bring together the most prestigious brands and will undoubtedly be one of the most hotly contested championships.”

“Not only will fans get to enjoy the main races but these will also backed by a range of support races, which will ensure a very intense and vibrant program. This is going to be a very special weekend that any racing enthusiast or even those after any interested short-break should not miss," he said. 

Manuel da Luz, President of the Municipal Chamber of Portimão said "these events are very important to the country and even more so even the current economic situation. Events such as these greatly help to stimulate and boost the local economy, which is greatly needed at this time.” 

“Hopefully this will lay the foundation for the Algarve and Portugal in general to host future international sporting and cultural events such as this,” he said.

Tickets to the event start at €70 (£107) for a one pass or through to €120 (£62) for a three day weekend pass with full paddock access.
