Hay fever symptoms peak at lunch time

Fifteen million hay fever sufferers could be set for a summer indoors according to the latest research from Prevalin, a new hay fever treatment now available in pharmacies.
In fact, those who suffer from hay fever may be stuck at home/in the office during lunch time with symptoms reportedly at their worst between 12–3pm each day.
Allergy expert Andrew Williams comments, “The pollen counts at head level are at their highest in the morning and evening due to the pollen rising on warm air and then coming down to earth as the upper air cools in the evening. Although immediate hay fever symptoms will occur at first contact with pollen (especially multiple sneezing and a runny nose), secondary symptoms like nasal congestion, intense itching of the throat and palate are particularly hideous and will occur a few hours later, ie around lunchtime.”
According to the Prevalin survey, the impact of hay fever symptoms means many sufferers will miss out on favourite summer activities with more than half of those polled saying they would most miss picnics in the park, summer barbeques and leisurely walks with a risqué 4% admitting to missing out on outdoor sex!
Olympian Denise Lewis, OBE, who suffers from hay fever says: “Hay fever is really irritating and makes me feel drowsy and unattractive – streaming eyes doesn’t make it easy putting make-up on! When I was competing in the heptathlon, hay fever would make me feel lethargic and swollen sinuses made it hard to breathe properly. Obviously as an athlete you want to be able to take in as much oxygen as possible to deliver your best performance. I can remember times when I’d be preparing to compete in the javelin and they’d be cutting the grass which didn’t help matters!
“Nowadays, hay fever gets in the way of doing normal things like gardening, cycling and playing outside with my kids. My daughter suffers from hay fever too so I was interested to hear about the launch of Prevalin, which is drug free and suitable for children, pregnant women and sports people like me as it has no side effects.”
Symptoms also affect the sense of smell and taste for over half (54%) of hay fever sufferers which may prevent them from enjoying the nation’s top rated smell of the summer (freshly cut grass) and taste (barbeque food).
The survey findings reveal that hay fever symptoms have impacted or ruined important events for nearly half (48%) of sufferers, including summer parties, holidays and weddings.
What’s more, respondents who go to extreme lengths to manage their symptoms admit to stuffing tissues up their nose, showering more regularly, eating local honey or even wearing a mask in an attempt to gain control of their symptoms.
Productivity was also found to be an issue for workers with almost half of sufferers (48%) admitting that their symptoms impact on their work life during the hay fever season.
Don Jayasinghe, Brand Manager of Prevalin, who conducted the hay fever poll said: “Our research shows that hay fever symptoms can be life destroying for sufferers during the season. The results suggest that workers may experience a summer of hell spending their lunch hour indoors for fear of triggering their symptoms in the open air. People who don’t suffer can often be unsympathetic about the impact of hay fever but this can be a debilitating condition for many, especially at the height of the season. We are delighted to be launching a new generation of hay fever treatment that works immediately, provides relief for both eye and nasal symptoms, and is free of anti-histamines and steroids.”
Despite a range of hay fever solutions available, nearly a quarter of sufferers said they were not satisfied with their current treatments. Sufferers are looking for a treatment that provides complete and immediate relief without side effects. Prevalin is a new kind of microgel spray designed to provide immediate action to all symptoms experienced in the nose and eyes. Prevalin tackles the root cause of hay fever by deactivating the pollen inside the nose and creating a barrier that prevents further pollen from infecting the nasal mucosa. The nasal spray can be used by everyone, including pregnant and breast feeding women, and has no reported side effects.
