Grundy & Co Excavations Ltd Managing Director Kevin Grundy cites high quality support from Volvo Dealer Thomas Hardie Commercials as the prime reason for increasing the Volvo content of the company’s tipper fleet with the purchase of three new FMX 8-wheel tippers: “Thomas Hardie can’t do enough for us. Although our Volvo FM tippers are very reliable, we always buy Genuine Volvo Parts. The support we receive from Thomas Hardie is second to none. A high level of Dealer support is vital to us as we operate seven days a week between 7 am and 5pm.”

Bolstered by a gradual return to confidence in the construction industry in north-west England, and a desire to maintain the company’s reputation for innovation and service, Grundy & Co Excavation Ltd continues to invest in vehicles, plant and machinery. This includes the three 011 registered Volvo FMX tippers and a massive turnkey capital project in the guise of a bespoke-built Sand Wash plant – a type of Construction Materials Recycling Facility. The company is also a major user of Volvo Construction Equipment with a fleet of 20 machines including L220E wheeled loaders.

The £1.6 million Sand Washing and recycling plant, which was designed and built by Northern Ireland’s CDE, was first commissioned into use in April 2010 and is now fully on-stream processing overburden and construction waste into seven types of high quality material for use in the construction industry, including civil engineering, infrastructure and road building projects.

Grundy & Co Excavations Ltd are a family-run business with over 35 years industry experience and are based on a 9.5 acre recycling site in Widnes, Lancashire. According to Kevin Grundy, the company is currently recycling over 90% of the material brought into their site.

The raw material for the CDE Sand Washing plant is brought in from the company’s own demolition and excavation operations using a fleet of 8-wheel tippers, including the new Volvo FMXs.

The three FMX tippers, which were supplied by Volvo’s north-west England and North Wales Dealer Thomas Hardie Commercials at nearby Knowsley, are equipped with Volvo’s high torque D13C380 13-litre diesel which develops 380hp and 1900Nm between 1,000 and 1400 rpm.

The D13C uses SCR technology to achieve Euro-5 emission compliance and the AdBlue tank is sited on the nearside chassis rail.

Kevin Grundy also specified Volvo’s I-Shift automated transmission saying: “These are our first Volvos with I-Shift. We expect it to have a beneficial effect on the fuel returns as the drivers can concentrate on driving rather than on selecting gears to adjust to the road conditions. We’re sure that the FMX will be a very productive truck on the type of on and off road work we undertake.”
