Retro summer fashion trends from ASOS

20th May 2011 Print

Combining ’50s references with a modern aesthetic, Atelier is a trend that encompasses the contradiction between old and new.

Contrasting natural fabrics fuse with high-tech materials and mismatched textures are pieced together. Fabrics are worn-in, internals made external and seams left raw with shirts, shorts and dresses all appearing cleverly cut. A nod to the Teddy Boy gives a masculine edge, though femininity is added with pleats slicing across dresses and skirts in midi lengths. Lingerie details across corset camis and bodices are layered under transparencies.

Coquette mixes ’30s and ’40s resort for a flirtatious take on retro. Inspired by the French Riviera, this range plays with quirky silhouettes and prints. Crop tops and playful mini skirts come in conversational prints and oversized ginghams. Bright colours and bold stripes mix with denim to keep the look young and fresh, whilst fruit prints such as pineapples inject a sense of fun into this summer trend.

The ’70s-inspired collection Solaris is a sophisticated take on the decade. The maxi takes centre stage, giving voluminous, floor-sweeping drama to summer dressing. Deep-set pleats, caped shoulders and cutaway necklines are a key focus, with palazzo pants looking elegant in statement colours. The palette is sun-drenched and rich with cinnamon, tobacco, deep aquatic blue and terracotta.

ASOS Revive and ASOS Black return, with ASOS Revive drawing on poolside glamour and ’70s excess. ASOS Black’s statement looks are covered in shards of perspex embellishment for a futuristic feel. Fabric manipulations are signature to the look with injections of sharp tailoring and pleats. A clean colour palette consists of pale hues, ranging from pure white to icy blues and pale citrus.

The eagerly anticipated second collection from ASOS White presents pared down, minimal looks with shots of bright block colour, playing on proportions. Our ethical ASOS Africa range pulls fashion to the fore with a soft tailored sensibility, mixing rustic fabrics and mono prints.

New for S/S ’11, The Salon introduces unique designs from the ASOS atelier taking influences from key vintage silhouettes and redefining them. Presented in semi-pastels, this 30-piece collection is covetable and timeless.

In addition, ASOS presents a full range of shoes, bags, eyewear and jewellery which perfectly complements the collections.
