Concerns over rogue mobility traders

23rd May 2011 Print

Just over a quarter of people in the UK are concerned about buying independent living aids, such as mobility scooters and power chairs from disreputable or rogue traders, according to research from Simplyhealth.

Kevin Snowball, Managing Director, Simplyhealth Living, comments: "With our research finding that more than a third of people in the UK living with, or having a close relative with some form of impaired mobility it's important that people are aware of how to avoid hard sell or rogue traders.

"Our research shows that 27% of people would have no idea of where to go to find independent living aids, this could mean they are more susceptible to hard sell doorstep callers.

"44% of people also want to ensure their mobility aids are compatible with their home environment. All reputable businesses will have made a pre-arranged appointment to visit you in your home to assess your individual needs and to tailor your independent living aid to your home environment. If requested, most organisations will also send you a confirmation of the appointment date and time in the post. Our advice would be not to open the door if you haven't received either of these.

"We would also recommend that you ask a friend, neighbour or healthcare professional to be with you during your appointment. Should you be in any doubt, then you can contact your local Disabled Living Centre to obtain a list of reputable retailers in your area.

"Doorstep callers or rogue traders tend to target elderly or vulnerable members of society, by making them aware of reputable outlets we can help to protect them. Especially, in light of the spending cuts, we need to ensure that people aren't giving their money to disreputable companies who don't have their best interests at heart."

Simplyhealth has a number of Independent Living Centres in the UK that provide specialist advice and equipment to aid individuals with activities in and outside of their home.
