Under pressure? Don’t ignore your tyres

26th May 2011 Print

Driver training specialist IAM Drive & Survive is offering weekly motoring tips to drivers from its head of training, Simon Elstow.

This week he recommends regularly checking your tyres.

The section of tyre that keeps us in contact with the road is only the size of a footprint, so it’s important to ensure it is working optimally.

An under-inflated tyre wears far more quickly than one which is inflated properly.  Industry experts claim that a 20 per cent reduction in pressure can shorten a tyre’s useful life by up to 30 per cent.  And checking that the pressure is correct for the vehicle - including the load - can also have a considerable impact on your fuel bill. Underinflated tyres will increase your fuel consumption by up to five per cent.

IAM Drive & Survive head of training Simon Elstow said: “Check tyre pressure when the tyres are cold, at least once a month – and weekly is far better. And don’t be tempted to over-inflate them. This causes poor vehicle handling, reduced stability in braking, cornering and reduced grip.”

IAM Drive & Survive recommends that you check your tyres for wear, damage and pressure.  If you pick up a nail, or damage the sidewall on a pothole or a curb, you may be able to save the tyre before it’s ruined.
