31st May 2011 Print

Manchester United fanatic Paul Quinn scored his own Champions League success by buying the registration UTD 80Y for £12,900.

The 45-year-old stopped off while en route to Wembley to watch his beloved team play in the Champions League final to successfully bid for UTD 80Y which went under the DVLA Personalised Registrations’ hammer.

Mr Quinn, who owns the Town Hall Hotel in Eccles, Manchester, freely admitted he would have broken the bank and paid £40,000 for his plate, but declared “I wouldn’t sell it for £140,000!”

He said: “I can’t believe it, it’s a perfect plate. I have another UTD registration, but this is the tops.”

The most expensive plate sold by the DVLA during its spring auction was 888 A, incredibly it was the first lot of the sale and sold for a staggering £52,000 to a mystery businessman based in the north of England.
