Football fans spent nearly over £1,000 last season
The curtain has now come down on the 2010/11 football season - nine months of sweat, joy/tears (delete as applicable)... and a lot of money.
MSN Money ran a poll asking users how much they spent following their football team over the past season. Nearly a quarter (22%) said they had spent over £1,000. Of those, 14% had spent over £2,001 following their favourite team. That's over £50 a week over the course of a 39-week season.
Meanwhile, over half (51%) spent less than £100, enough for just a couple of games at the top clubs.
Matchday tickets are now just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to splashing out on following a club. There's also the team shirt, matchday programmes, souvenir DVD, TV sports channel subscriptions. And then there's the cost of travel to and from matches, food and drink... the list goes on.
Simon Ward, Senior Editor at MSN Money, commented: "The large number of fans spending four-figure sums on supporting their team illustrates the huge costs involved in being a truly dedicated football fan today."
To help fans calculate the cost of their footy spending, MSN Money has just unveiled a football cost calculator, which includes everything from season tickets to pies and pints.
