Celebrations as Houndwood launches on former Clarks site

Business leaders gathered this week to celebrate the launch of one of the region’s most exciting new developments – Houndwood in Street.
Offering an impressive selection of one, two, three and four bedroom homes, set within beautifully-landscaped surroundings, the Barratt development is located on the site of the former Clarks warehouse in the town.
Tom Clark, a member of the Clark family, was among those celebrating the launch – and his enthusiasm for the pioneering new development was unwavering as he talked to guests: “From the very beginning, we have worked closely with Barratt to make Houndwood somewhere special in which to live,” he said.
“It has been absolutely thrilling to witness it all taking shape. And the green areas at the centre of the development are a particular joy.
“I am a big supporter of the idea of shared space – that roads and walkways should be almost indistinguishable. This is not a concrete jungle, it is a tranquil and relaxed place in which to live – and I am very proud of our involvement.
“Clarks property director, Chris Pleeth, has played a pivotal role in working with Barratt to fulfill our joint vision for Houndwood. His tireless enthusiasm has helped to ensure these homes will be talked about for many years to come.
“This is an outstanding development – one that I believe buyers and developers alike will travel hundreds of miles to view. It is so special, in fact, that I plan to live here myself one day.”
The mix of modern homes, designed for a range of buyers and varied lifestyles, are built within a traditional setting – including semi-mature trees and green street scenes.
“Whenever we plan new developments, Barratt considers carefully the needs and wishes of the new communities we are creating.” said Barratt managing director Richard Gregory.
“Here at Houndwood it is particularly important to retain the Somerset identity within this collection of delightful new homes. And we feel our designers have achieved this here.”
The town of Street is situated on the Somerset levels, close to the scenic Polden Hills. The River Brue is to the north of the village and the famous Glastonbury Tor is just two miles south west.
The town is known for its connection with Clarks, after the Quaker family founded its shoe empire here in 1825. The area provides all local amenities and has excellent transport links – with the towns and cities of Bristol, Bath, Bridgwater, Taunton and Yeovil all close by.
