The Tour de France 2011 is a less than a month away, and the team at Ski Horizon can hardly wait! For three weeks, the eyes of the cycling world will be fixed firmly on France, where the best riders in the world battle it out across some of the most gruelling terrain in the Alps.

And because Ski Horizon love cycling almost as much as they love skiing, they’ve published a brand new Tour de France article in their online Mountain Holiday Guide.

From July 2nd to the 24th, the Tour de France will traverse the torturous French mountain roads, passing through the Auvergne, the Pyrenees and the Alps en route. Ski Horizon will be watching as the finest riders in the world strive for the coveted polka dot jersey, awarded to the best mountain competitor on the Tour. Let’s see how they fare on the dreaded Tourmalet!

Last year, around 15 million people travelled to France to support their favourite athletes, some going as far as to pitch their tents on the roadside days before the race even passed them! That’s dedication, and a good example of the kind of excitement the Tour generates. This year promises to attract even more spectators, and a plethora of extra curricular activities will be taking place in the mountains whilst the Tour is underway.

With 6 mountain stages and 2 rugged stages, the Tour de France 2011 is the Summer mountains sports event. In a previous article about the Tour in the Ski Horizon Holiday Guide, you can find more information about the new stages in the event. To learn more, visit Ski Horizon's Tour de France 2011 guide.

For places to stay and enjoy this sporting event, see Ski Horizon’s recommended Tour de France accommodation.

Of course the mountains aren’t just about the Tour de France, and there are a wealth of summer activities you can sample while you’re there, from climbing, kayaking, to cycling and more. Ski stations aren’t just about skiing! Ski Horizon's Mountain Holiday Ski Guide gives you all the information you need to pick the mountain holiday that’s right for you. And coming soon you’ll also be able to read about the best golf courses, the most exciting sporting opportunities available in the mountains, and the best trekking trails too. Naturally, you can also find articles on skiing and winter sports to help you prepare for your next ski holiday.
