Sue Marshall - diabetes expert and founder of the diabetes kitbag company Desang (desang.net) - shares her top 8 interesting facts and figures about diabetes.

As a diabetes sufferer herself and the creator of the Desang Diabetes Magazine and online resource, she is an expert on the topic . . .

8 things you didn't know about diabetes...

1. One in 40 people in the UK has some form of diabetes and the International Diabetes Foundation estimates that 285 million people suffer from diabetes worldwide.

2. It is estimated that there are around 850,000 people in the UK with Type 2 diabetes who have not yet been diagnosed with the condition.

3. Having diabetes puts a person at the same risk of developing heart disease as a person who has had a heart attack, but who doesn't have diabetes.

4. Around 3 in 10 people with Type 1 diabetes and around 8 in 10 people with Type 2 diabetes develop high blood pressure.

5. A large research study called the UK Prospective Diabetes Study found that those with well controlled blood pressure had nearly a third less risk of dying from complications related to diabetes (heart attack, stroke, etc) compared with those with poorly controlled blood pressure.

6. Diabetes tends to lower HDL 'good' cholesterol, and raise triglyceride and LDL 'bad' cholesterol levels, which increases the risk for heart disease and stroke.

7. A person with diabetes who lowers their LDL cholesterol can reduce cardiovascular complications (stroke, heart attack, etc) by 20-50%.

8. High blood cholesterol and high blood pressure can often be managed with some simple lifestyle changes, from exercising regularly and eating a healthy diet to taking natural supplements that help to lower cholesterol and/or blood pressure, like the products 'help: cholesterol' and 'help: blood pressure' from Works with Water Nutraceuticals.

As diabetes is linked to hypertension and high blood cholesterol levels, the following products from Works with Water Nutraceuticals can help diabetes sufferers to control both blood pressure and cholesterol, while reducing their risk of heart disease:

help: blood pressure - RRP £9.99
This supplement contains only natural ingredients including dairy peptides - bioactive proteins extracted from milk by using advanced scientific methods - that have been proven to help reduce blood pressure after a minimum period of six weeks.
Extensive research has shown that dairy peptides (lactrotripeptides), the key ingredient in help: blood pressure, reduces the chemical in the blood stream that causes blood vessels to narrow and constrict (angiotensin II). Therefore, a decrease of this chemical will help the blood vessels to relax and widen, and so the pressure of blood within the blood vessels is reduced.

In a recent consumer trial of 67 individuals with hypertension, 89% recorded a significant reduction in their blood pressure after taking the product.

help: cholesterol - RRP £10.99
This supplement contains only natural ingredients including barley beta glucan - extracted from barley by using advanced scientific methods - and has been proven to help reduce LDL cholesterol levels after a minimum period of six weeks.

Clinical research has shown that taking 3 to 8g of barley beta glucan a day, the key ingredient in help: cholesterol, reduces the 'bad' cholesterol (LDL cholesterol) by an average of 10-14%. These results have been confirmed by the EFSA (European Food Standards Agency) in 2009 after analysis of the clinical research into the cholesterol-lowering benefits of beta glucan.
