Design students from Bury College have been showing their creative talents in a competition to create a large-scale mural as part of the birthday celebrations at Miller Homes @ The Rock in Bury town centre.

Miller Homes prestigious development of chic, contemporary apartments completes the line up of high street brands and leisure facilities in one lifestyle destination. The Rock, Bury’s £500m town centre success story has attracted over 9m visitors since opening on 16 July 2010. Miller Homes has sold 80 apartments in the same period.

Bury College students were invited to take part in the competition back in April. The last few weeks have seen frantic activity on the part of students to get their work finished, and on Wednesday 29 June the winners were selected during competition judging attended by the Mayor of Bury, Councillor Yvonne Creswell and the Deputy Mayor, Councillor John Byrne.

The winning design is to feature in the foyer of Mazarin House, the apartment building that spans the new Marks & Spencer store. The mural artwork that could cover an area of 37 square metres over two walls will be visible from the St John’s Square in the heart of Bury, for years to come.

The first prize goes to Kelly Ma from the first year, interactive media course who wins an iPad2.Second and third prizes of an iPod touch go to Lee McLean, Second Year Graduate and Reece Hacking, interactive media course.

The iPad2 and iPod prizes were not the only incentive for the students. The winning design will provide the opportunity for the student to oversee their work being taken from the concept and design stage through to the finished, large scale digital art work.

Clare Noakes, Miller Homes Project Sales and Marketing Manager said: “It has been a pleasure working with the staff and students at Bury College. The standard of all the entries is outstanding. All involved should be proud of their achievement.”

John Pritchard, the Assistant Curriculum Manager for visual arts at Bury College, said: “The competition sponsored by Miller Homes has been a fantastic success. The students have been very keen and eager to take part, and the entries truly reflect the breadth and depth of talent within the Visual Arts department at Bury College.

“The students have found designing for such an unique brief, refreshing and challenging, and have all said how great it has been working to the theme of ‘Bury then and now’. All the students have thoroughly enjoyed looking at the changing face of Bury over the years.”
