Maryland is fit for a royal visit

Although Maryland was not on William and Kate’s U.S. itinerary there is plenty in the state that makes Maryland worth a visit next time around.

As a former English colony Maryland has everything from pub crawling and shopping on Thames Street in Fells Point, to steeplechase races in Cockeysville, not to mention the royal pedigree in Annapolis and Queen Anne’s County.

Named as the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, their trip would kick off with a stop in Cambridge, Dorchester County. Located in the heart of Chesapeake Bay country, this beautiful and tranquil county offers activities for both man and wife. Why not kayak through the Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge spotting eagles and then relax at Stillwater Spa at the Hyatt Regency Chesapeake Bay for a Caviar Facial.

Gov. John Seymour incorporated “Anne’s City” on 22 November 1708 on behalf of King James II’s daughter, the future Queen of England. This has been the only charter issued under royal seal in Maryland. Today, the quaint colonial brick lined streets of Annapolis, America’s “sailing capital”, offer great harbour side dining, shopping and sailing opportunities aboard the harbor’s 74-foot Schooners.

Other royal stops to explore in Baltimore:

Why not swap Windsor Castle for The Cloisters in Lutherville, the hilltop castle where Hollywood royalty, Will Smith and Jada Pinkett-Smith got married in 1998.

Remember Wallis Simpson, the Baltimore socialite for whom Edward VIII abdicated the throne? Explore her gowns, documents, photos and her extraordinary life at The Maryland Historical Society.

Diamonds are a girl’s best friend and the jewellery collection at the Walters Art Museum houses one special treat: the gold and Diamond enamelled Gatchina Palace Faberge egg created in 1901 for Nicolas II of Russia.
