Ronseal launch search for young gardening talent

3rd August 2011 Print

The search is on to find the nation’s next Charlie Dimmock or Alan Titchmarsh, as Ronseal launches its ‘Garden Gurus’ campaign to unearth the UK’s next generation of gardening talent.

The leading woodcare manufacturer is looking for the cream of the gardening crop after its research revealed that gardening has shed its ‘older image’ and is no longer exclusively the pastime of the middle aged and retired. Apparently it is experiencing a boom in popularity amongst young people across Britain, with 82 per cent getting green-fingered before the age of 30.

Whether it’s submitting a garden design, picture of your garden or providing up to 150 words on why you deserve to win, budding young gardeners aged 16 and above, must submit their entry before August 9th to become Ronseal’s Garden Guru. The overall male and female winner will each receive a £1,000 cash price, a year’s supply of Ronseal kit and the opportunity to be the company’s gardening ambassador in 2012.

RHS Young Designer of the Year, Hugo Buggs (24), said:  "It’s encouraging to see that gardening is becoming increasingly popular with younger people and that Ronseal is launching a search to find the nation’s up-and-coming gardening talent.”

“It was interesting that its research revealed that over half (63 per cent) of 25-plus year olds feel uninspired by the current crop of celebrity gardeners and think that a new or younger face would encourage even more young people to be green-fingered.”

Kate Hodge, marketing manager at Ronseal, added: “Gardening may have traditionally been seen as a pastime for older people, but a climate of spending cuts and its new-found fashionable image, appears to be prompting an increasing number of young people to get out into the garden.

“That is why we are now launching our own nationwide search to unearth Britain’s young horticultural heroes and ensure our continued passion for gardening is passed down to future generations.”

Gardeners aged 16 and above can enter Ronseal’s Garden Gurus competition by simply emailing gardengurus@lucre.co.uk with up to 150 words on why they deserve to win along with a photograph of their garden or a hand-drawn garden design sketch.  Entries must be submitted before midday on August 9th, with the winner announced shortly after.
