Bridesmaid Britain’s worst paid job?

Blushing brides nationwide will be closely followed down the aisle by 4,731 bridesmaids this Saturday, (6th August), the most popular date for loved up couples in the UK to wed this year.

With more than one in ten brides-to-be worried about being upstaged on their big day, nearly a third of bridesmaids (29 per cent) will be wearing dresses chosen to be deliberately unflattering according to a national survey commissioned by Confetti.co.uk, the UK’s number one wedding website.

With a quarter of bridesmaids spending between 21 and 30 hours on preparing for the role - and expected to pick up the bill for their unbecoming outfit - it is arguably one of Britain’s worst paid jobs, with the average bridesmaid (40 per cent) receiving a thank you gift of just £20 in value. 

Today’s busy bridesmaid can expect to be tasked with counselling the bride, organising a lavish hen party and finding the perfect wedding dress in addition to arranging flowers and  even their own shoes.

Having said that, a wedding is an exciting and wonderful thing to be a part of and worth every second.  Belinda Hanks, Editor at Confetti.co.uk, which has launched a campaign to find the UK’s Ultimate Bridesmaid, said:  “Love is officially in the air on Saturday and we’d like to extend our congratulations to every bride’s loyal bridesmaids because they are such an essential part of a big day.

“Most bridesmaids do actually love the honour of being asked, simply because they are doing it for their best friend.  However, just one in ten brides are willing to hear the honest truth from their bridesmaids so let’s not forget it’s a role that takes a lot of patience even if they are the best person to deal with any stresses the bride might have. Although she may become a little difficult at times, it’s part of the job, and one that deserves a big reward.”
