It’s free and it’s yellow and will save you from peril

One of the biggest fears of motorists, breaking down in the dark on an unlit road, is being tackled by road safety champion GEM Motoring Assist (GEM). The organisation, that for 75 years has worked to reduce accident and injury to all road users, is giving away a free high visibility jacket to drivers that enrol in its acclaimed recovery schemes this winter.

In many European countries wearing a fluorescent and reflective jacket is a legal requirement when attending to a broken down vehicle so the practicality of the GEM scheme is well proven.

The free jackets will be available to those that join GEM’s Recovery Extra or Recovery Reclaim schemes for as long as stocks last.

David Williams, Chief Executive of GEM said: “This is a great way to celebrate the fast approaching anniversary of our foundation in 1932. Drivers and passengers who suffer the trauma of a vehicle breakdown, especially on unlit roads, are very vulnerable and can easily go unseen by approaching traffic.

“We are minimising this risk by issuing the free high visibility jackets along with an information guide endorsed by the police. It outlines safe practice and is a fine example of how GEM works for those who have just joined us.

“During the winter months and following the change in the clocks more motorists are driving in the dark and this is the worst time of year for crashes. Incidents of vehicles breaking down also increase during the winter months.

“As a safety organisation GEM is determined to play its part and do as much as possible to address the problem of these tragedies.”

The easiest way to join Recovery Extra or Recovery Reclaim is to visit gem-breakdown.co.uk and gain a 10% discount on the published competitive price.
