New homes venture launching in Wigan

People in Wigan will be able to ditch the DIY and move to a brand new home with the launch of Redrow’s latest venture.

The award-winning housebuilder is transforming the site of the former St Thomas More High School in Newtown to offer a stand out range of two, three and four-bedroom homes.

Known as College Court, the development will launch this weekend (September 10 and 11) when the first homes are released for sale.

It will be a welcome boost to the housing stock in the area, particularly as research by Redrow shows many people vastly underestimate how much it would cost to upgrade an older property in line with a new one.

One in five of those surveyed thought up to £5,000 would be sufficient when, in reality, Redrow has demonstrated that it could cost as much as £30,000 to bring an old property up to the same standard as one of their brand new homes.

Lesley Myers, area sales manager for Redrow Homes (Lancashire), commented: “People often buy an old house to ‘fix up’ because they think they can’t afford a brand new one, but our figures show it can be a false economy.

“The cost of installing a new kitchen, bathroom, redecorating throughout, installing a new heating system, replacing windows and other items could cost up to £30,000. When you buy a brand new home you can enjoy the fun of choosing the finish of the kitchen and bathroom and then sit back while we do the hard work for you. You’ll also enjoy peace of mind knowing that your new home is covered by a 10-year ‘Buildmark’ warranty.

Prices will be announced at the launch, but with FirstBuy available on selected properties, some homes at College Court will be more affordable through a 20% equity loan towards the cost. Open to those with an annual household income below £60,000 the loan is interest free for the first five years and can be paid back when the home owner has more funds available or comes to resell.

“Thanks to FirstBuy those who feared they had been priced out of the property market could find that they are able to buy a brand new home at a price they can afford,” Lesley added.

“It also means that people who think they have to settle for a home that’s in need of lots of work will be delighted to discover that they won’t have to compromise on style to achieve their dream of homeownership.”

Close to Wigan town centre, residents of College Court will benefit from a range of local amenities including the nearby Robin Park sports, leisure and retail complex with its shops, cafes, bars, a cinema and sports facilities. The development also enjoys easy access to the M6, making the homes a good base for commuters working across the North West.
