Developments in GTR Hybrid Turbocharging
Further developments of the Nissan GTR Hybrid Turbocharger are underway as “Evo Magazine Tuner of the Year 2010” Performance Specialist Litchfield imports work together with Turbo Dynamics to produce further stages in the highly sought after GTR MD Range.
Quietly, behind the continuously buzzing scenes at Turbo Dynamics, the brief came from Ian Litchfield, owner of Litchfield Imports: “GO AS BIG AS YOU POSSIBLY CAN”!
Instructions like this are issued regularly to the Hybrid Development Team, headed up by Matt Waterman. But on this occasion, Litchfield had a purpose bought 3.8 V6 Twin Turbocharged engine from Nissan and he wanted Matt to squeeze the highest flow possible, giving as much horsepower as was realistically possible from the standard twin turbochargers. Knowing that before the reality comes the dream, Matt set to work, enthusing “These sort of projects tantalise the taste buds, making it even easier to turn the dream into reality.”
TD are currently building the Garrett GT30 Ball Bearing Turbochargers into a new Hybrid spec, featuring TD’s own design of billet compressor wheel. These turbos have been given the TD exclusive part numbers of MD602 and MD603.
Once these beauties are despatched, Litchfield will produce an on engine dynograph to see what power the turbochargers achieve using the standard exhaust manifold set up. As part of this development stage, any improvements will be worked on to ensure the brief will be fulfilled!
Litchfield’s special edition Nissan excited the media in the Autumn of last year when it was announced that Renault F1 owner Eric Lopez, with whom Litchfield have a long standing relationship, bought one of their 710HP GTR LM700, sporting Turbo Dynamics Stage 1 GTR Hybrid turbochargers (part numbers MD525 and MD526).
